I lived in Dallas for 29 years before moving to the Denver area a year ago, and in my humble (and correct) opinion, Dallas is Burgertopia both in terms of quantity and quality of burger joints. My husband mourns the loss of Whataburger while I the loss of Burger Street for a quick burger fix. That being said, I am bonkers for Crave Real Burgers, which has three locations – all in Colorado. I tend to be a burger purist. I don’t like a lot of “stuff” on my burger that overpowers the taste of the meat – just some fresh lettuce and tomato, a very light smear of yellow mustard, and if I’m being really adventurous, onion. If you jones for a simple burger, Crave’s Plain Jane burger is excellent. Simplicity is not, however, Crave’s calling card; inventing wild and crazy burger concoctions is. They will put anything on a burger. Case in point: the Nutty Professor burger has peanut butter. They will use anything in lieu of buns. The Luther burger features donuts. The Fatty Melt boasts grilled cheese sandwiches instead of humdrum bread. (Some of their burger names make me snicker.) My favorite so far (I’ve been a few times) is the Colorado burger pictured above, a meaty creation with shredded lamb, poblanos, onions, pepper jack, and avocado added to the burger. If you like pork products with your beef, the Three Little Pigs with pulled pork, ham, and bacon is a winner. Check out Crave’s website to see all their inspired offerings, and if you’re ever in Denver or Colorado Springs, do the Crave!
